Human Resources Across the Ages: How We Got Here

Human resources hasn’t always been what we know it as today. In fact, when I first started my career over 30 years ago, HR looked very different, and truthfully, so did the workplace.

Early on, HR was mostly administrative. It was paperwork, policies, and making sure companies stayed compliant. There wasn’t much focus on people as individuals, and even less on culture. Employees were often seen as replaceable, and HR’s role was to keep things running, not necessarily to help people thrive.

Over time, I watched a shift happen. Businesses began to realize that people aren’t just part of the process, they are the process. Culture started to matter. Leadership started to matter. And HR slowly moved from the background into a more strategic role at the table.

Today, HR is no longer just about hiring and compliance. It’s about building strong teams, creating environments where people feel valued, and helping organizations grow in a sustainable way. It’s about understanding that when you take care of your people, everything else follows.

That evolution is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about the work I do. I’ve seen what happens when HR is treated as an afterthought and what’s possible when people are considered from the start.

At Tori Thorne & Company, we bring that modern perspective to every client we serve. Because HR isn’t just a function anymore, it’s a foundation.
